Meet the Businesses that Help to Make Our Conferences Possible!

Bangor Oct 2013 Logos        Andro Nov 2013 Logos

Despite the technology glitches of the past few weeks that prevented thousands of emails from being delivered, both the Greater Bangor Real Estate, Housing & Land Use Conference and the Greater Andro conference are still ON!  And
you can still get 8 CEUs on either Thursday, Oct 31 in Bangor or Friday, Nov 8 in Lewiston.  (Your registration fee also includes coffee breaks and lunch.)

However, you shouldn’t wait much longer to sign up.  Our space at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor is limited in size, and we won’t be able to handle a lot of unexpected last minute registrations… so hurry and sign up now – by Tuesday, Oct 29 at midnight at the latest! http://bangorhousingshowattendees.eventbrite.com, or call John at 207 713 0674, or me at 207 740 2247.

There’s a little more time to sign up for the Andro conference, but time is running out for that one as well… it’s less than two weeks away!  You can register online at http://androhousingconferenceattendees.eventbrite.com – or of course, you can call John at 207 713 0674 or me at 207 740 2247.

Excitement! On Thursday morning, I was visiting my aunt and uncle in Bangor when I got a call from Clay Gordon, of the Bangor area Channel 7 ABC/Fox network, who wants to interview me sometime next week for his morning show. Cool!  Let’s hope he still has a spot open, since it took me nearly a day and a half to wade through my emails to respond to his written follow up – I’ve offered to be available on Tuesday morning.  (If you’re up thataway, tune in to see how smaht I sound – cross my fingers!)

We have a number of exhibitors who are ready to tell you about their products and services. Check them out, drop your business card in the bucket and maybe you’ll win a door prize!

ANDROSCOGGIN:

In Lewiston, John F Murphy Homes, Inc is the Designated Non-Profit… a great organization that has provided excellent services to people with intellectual disabilities for more than 3 decades.   www.jfmhomes.org
The lunchtime Keynoter is Jim Bennett, the City Manager for Presque Isle, and former City Administrator for Lewiston… it should be a great discussion!  We’re also hoping for free chair massages for all at this conference, too!

Good Things Come from Being Chosen as the Designated Non-Profit at a Maine Real Estate, Housing & Land Use Conference

Designated Non Profit Status Logo

As someone who’s always worked at least two jobs, or has worked for someone else while also running my own business, I figure that all told, my 40 year work career actually adds up to about 80 years of experience.  And since at least 30 percent of my career has been in the non-profit world (not to mention all of the years serving on non-profit boards), that means I have a good few decades or more in furthering the goals of not-for-profit organizations.

(Plus, for 10 years I ran a for-profit social services agency – we had essentially the same funding mechanisms as the non-profits, but with the disadvantages of being unable to get grants and donations, while also having to pay income, sales and property taxes.)

This means that supporting non-profits is second nature to me, even though my primary business is “for profit”.

And that means that we try to actively help non-profits with similar goals as our conferences.

A few months before each Real Estate, Housing & Land Use conference we publish Requests for Proposals from agencies providing food, clothing and shelter.  It’s a simple, one-page RFP; having worked as a grant proposal writer, I know how much work it can be, and sometimes for no results at all.

Agencies applying for Designated Non-Profit status are then rated on items that help our committee determine whether the organization meets our criteria.  The scoring grid looks like this – you’ll have to click on the diagram to view it more easily:

Non Profit Scoring Grid

The agency with the highest number of points earns our Designated Non Profit Status.

What that gives them is

  1. a free exhibit booth
  2. the option of having conference attendees donate above the cost of their registration fee to the agency
  3. the ability to ask for donations during the event, and
  4. a 3-minute self-introduction prior to the keynote presentation.

Also, we often need volunteers to help with our conferences, and will donate $10 per hour of approved volunteer time to the exhibiting non-profit of that volunteer’s choice… so there’s another possible donation.  And, we’ll help that non-profit develop a fund-raising project specific to their participation in our conference.

From our perspective, it’s all about being a good neighbor.  Don’t you agree?

Note: The Designated Non-Profit Status RFP for the May 01-02, 2014 conference in Portland at Seasons Conference Center will be published shortly.  We encourage any and all non-profits providing food, clothing and/or shelter to apply.

A Widespread Email Glitch? Holy Black Hole, Batman!

Batman

10/18/2013.  UPDATE and ARGH!!  Yesterday we learned that a significant percentage – as high as 50% or more – of the thousands of emails we’ve sent out every couple of weeks regarding the conference never made it to the intended recipients – and that the problem is widespread throughout the Bangor area, and perhaps even beyond.  Phone calls to dozens of people yesterday confirmed this, and we’ve been asked to please re-send the information on the Bangor Area conference.  (We have no idea if this is confined to the Penobscot area, or if it’s hitting further south and east.)

As a result, so many people have not only missed the Early Bird Rate, but haven’t gotten anything from us, that we’re redoubling our efforts to get the information out to everyone…. AND we’re reducing our prices.  Ordinarily the Early Bird Rate would be long gone by now, but we’re reinstating it until October 24 at midnight.  And we’ve reduced the Last Minute Ticket pricing to our regular price rather than the higher rate needed to cover last minute expenses.  This seems the only fair way to handle such a difficult situation.

So if you see inconsistencies in our prices anywhere, please make allowances – it’s an awful lot of work to go back and find all the changes that must be made, especially during the final few weeks leading up to a conference.

Thanks for understanding!

The Conference Team

A Home. A Job. A Friend. And A Look at Homelessness from the BDN.

A home.   A job.   A friend.

Around the mid 1980s, a research study of people with serious mental illness found that the three primary goals of their lives were the same three primary goals of everyone else’s lives… A home. A job. A friend.

What those looked like… how they were defined… were a bit different, but the essence was the same.

A home.  We all need a space to call our own, where we can keep our personal possessions, and feel safe – whether it’s a 5,000 square foot waterfront property or just a single room in a boarding home.

A job.  “Job” is defined as purpose.   We all need to feel useful and as though our lives are meaningful.  Purpose varies widely; for some, it’s being a neurosurgeon or a school teacher.  For others… a stay at home parent or a church volunteer.  Purpose is not necessarily based on money, but rather, on being needed.

A friend.  We all need to belong… we need family, friends, a social group, or even a social worker who we can trust.  Or sometimes, for some people, that friend is a companion animal – a cat or dog that loves us no matter what.

It’s really that simple.  A home.  A job. A friend.

Almost 20 years ago I worked as the Housing Developer/Rental Subsidy Administrator for a mental health agency; prior to that I was the Community Support Supervisor for that same mental agency.  Addressing homelessness was a big part of both jobs.

The Bangor Daily News has just published a stark and overwhelmingly touching report that offers a glimpse of what it’s like to be without a space to call one’s own, and how it eats at one’s being.  You can review it here.

You Can Help:

Each of our Real Estate, Housing and Land Use Conferences has a Designated Non-Profit, which works to address issues of food, clothing and/or shelter among Maine’s most vulnerable citizens.

OHI

The Designated Non-Profit for the Greater Bangor conference being held on Oct 31-Nov 01, 2013 is OHI, a social services agency that helps provide those with disabilities with the resources they need to achieve their goals.  Housing is a major focus.  You can learn more about OHI at www.ohimaine.org.

JFM Homes

The Designated Non-Profit for the Greater Androscoggin conference being held on Nov 08, 2013 is John F Murphy Homes, Inc, which for 35 years has helped people with developmental disabilities find a place to call home.   Visit the JFM website at https://www.jfmhomes.org.

We hope you will learn more about these two great organizations, and help support their goals, their missions and their values.
